Hyères is a seaside resort in the département of Le Var, 16 km east of Toulon. On the Mediterranean coast, it encompasses the magnificent islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Le Levant. Sandy beaches, numerous creeks and lots of palm-trees play an important part in its lovely scenery. It is said that it was here in Hyères that the term "Côte d'Azur" was first coined, by writer Stéphen Liégard.
