Hyères is a seaside resort in the département of Le Var, 16 km east of Toulon. On the Mediterranean coast, it encompasses the magnificent islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Le Levant. Sandy beaches, numerous creeks and lots of palm-trees play an important part in its lovely scenery. It is said that it was here in Hyères that the term "Côte d'Azur" was first coined, by writer Stéphen Liégard.
The presence of the aristocracy, especially from England, left its mark on the town's architectural heritage. The heart of town, for example, features numerous Victorian villas. Nowadays, even though there are a few Belgian and Swiss buyers, the clientele is mostly French.
