Home to 4,156 residents, Ascain is a commune in the département of Pyrénées-Alantiques, on the border with Spain. It stands on the last peak of the Pyrenees (La Rhune), a few kilometres from the Atlantic coast. Ascain belongs to the urban area of Bayonne. Taking great care to preserve its environment, it leaves nature its original place. The commune is in fact classified as a natural zone of ecological, fauna and flora interest. With an agricultural tradition, Ascain now gives a larger role to tourism and service activities in general. It also continues to develop the quarrying and shaping of stone. The commune benefits from three primary schools, though for intermediate and secondary education, pupils have to travel to Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle or Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Ascain also runs several sports associations.
