A lovely commune in Les Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Arles lies 27 km west of Nîmes and 80 km east of Marseille. Its surface area of 187,455 acres makes it the largest commune in metropolitan France. Over 2,500 years old, it boasts a remarkable architectural legacy, justifying its label as a Town of Art and History. All its Roman and Romanesque buildings are listed as part of UNESCO's World Heritage, together with the 160 acres comprising the town centre. In 2008, underwater archeological searches came up with the oldest marble bust ever found of Julius Caesar.
