In Les Bouches-du-Rhône, Arles has a surface area of 187,455 acres making it the largest commune in metropolitan France. A popular tourist destination, it hosts numerous fetivities such as the Easter "Feria" (bull-fighting event) and the "Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie". It is, however, mostly distinguished for its rich architectural legacy. A Town of Art and History, Arles has inherited many historic monuments, many of which are listed in UNESCO's World Heritage, together with its entire town centre. Recently, archeological searches in the Rhône came up with the oldest marble bust ever found of Julius Caesar.
The property market in Arles is rather diverse. It encompasses nine distinct neighbourhoods, including those in the Old Town (Cité, Hauture, Méjan, Roquette and Cavalerie). Apartments in small residences can be found in the town centre. The most sought-after properties are, however, town mansions that have been rehabilitated to provide apartments overlooking pretty leafy courtyards.
