A sub-prefecture in the département of Le Vaucluse, Apt lies on the old Via Domitia built by the Romans, 38 km from Manosque, 55 km from Aix-en-Provence, and 53 km from Avignon. The town has spread to encompass hamlets and "lieux-dits", around the Saint-Anne Cathedral. Cross-crossed by five little rivers, it lies between Le Massif du Luberon and Les Monts du Vaucluse. Vineyards and orchards endow Apt's scenery with genuine Mediterranean authenticity. Since last century, the town has, however, chalked up constantly rising population figures.
45% of the accommodation in Apt is comprised of houses. Recently, the town reported a 100% rise in this segment of the market, and a rise of no less than 300% in the case of building plots. This town in Le Vaucluse is characterized by wide architectural diversity. It can be split into two main areas : the west, known as "Le Petit Luberon", and the east, or "Le Grand Luberon", extending as far as the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
