The 7th arrondissement lies on the Left Bank of the Seine. Occupying an area of 4.09 sq. km, it is home to about 57,000 residents. Its neighbourhoods form part of what is commonly referred to as the "beaux quartiers". Buildings here are often opulent and the population very well-heeled, with income ranking among the highest in France. The 7th plays host to several official institutions such as the National Assembly, the Hôtel Matignon, and a number of ministries. Another sizable attraction in the 7th arrondissement is the Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most famous landmarks, visited by almost 250 million people since it opened in 1889 on the occasion of the World Fair.
From the point of view of property prices, the 7th arrondissement is seen as the most expensive in Paris after the 6th. The highest prices are attained in the neighbourhoods of Les Invalides, Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin, the École Militaire and Gros Caillou. The average price is 10,494 euros per sq.m, in a bracket ranging from 8,394 to 11,701 euros. In this arrondissement, main residences acount for 79% of the properties, second residences for 12%, with 7% of properties lying vacant. Entire houses are extremely rare, though a few private mansions occasionally come up for sale.
