On the Left Bank of the Seine, the 14th arrondissement of Paris plays host to 140,317 inhabitants. Four neighbourhoods stand out : first, Montparnasse with its famous tower, once the haunt of many artists including Picasso and Hemingway, drawn by housing at modest prices, and now become a business and leisure district. Then, Le Petit-Montrouge, long a working-class neighbourhood. Today, it appeals to Parisians for its quiet atmosphere, green areas and unusual architecture. The neighbourhood around the Parc Montsouris is remarkable for its 37-acre park with a vast variety of shrubs and plants, and an artificial lake. Finally, the Plaisance neighbourhood, which took its name to incite people to come here for stays.
In the 14th arrondissement of Paris, apartments account for a large majority of the accommodation : it is estimated that they represent about 96% of the total. Trying to buy a house here is therefore something of a challenge. One does, however, sometimes come across a few town houses or villas with gardens, over towards Rue Ledion or in the Villa Duthy.
