The growing appeal of Gujan-Mestras

Seen as the capital of Arcachon’s oyster farming, Gujan-Mestras lies to the south of the Bassin d’Arcachon in Le Pays de Buch, near Bordeaux. The commune wins votes for its authenticity and well-preserved natural environment.

Combining oyster farming with sailing, the harbour of La Hume is one of Gujan-Mestras’ seven harbours and, without doubt, the most highly prized as it lies next to the chic little neighbourhood of La Hume with, among other things, its refined food shops.

Between sea and forest, in time with the tides, Gujan-Mestras attracts buyers in search of nature, an authentic heritage, and simple pleasures such as enjoying a few oysters accompanied by bread, butter, lemon, and a glass of white wine, in one of the many tasting cabins. The appeal of Gujan-Mestras lies in its breathtaking natural scenery, discovered on walks or bike rides, especially as 220 km of cycling trails have been laid out around the Bassin, leaving from Gujan-Mestras. The commune has in fact won the “Accueil Vélo” label, a national award guaranteeing a welcome and services of quality for cyclists.

Operating for over 16 years at the heart of the village of Moulleau, Moulleau Immobilier run by Julie Vrand-Lemoine proposes a selection of high-end properties, authentic or full of charm, all around the Bassin d’Arcachon.

“Gujan-Mestras is a new market that we have developed as a result of the enthusiasm for well-preserved natural areas during the pandemic,” explains Julie Vrand-Lemoine.

“Previously, we handled a few sales of large year-round residences for clients wanting to live in the country, near Bordeaux. Today, this address with an authentic, natural soul also attracts buyers of second homes of character, with budgets more modest than those required for Le Pyla or Arcachon.”

Increasingly popular, the charming oyster farming commune offers a peaceful lifestyle surrounded by a pine forest. Gujan-Mestras also offers a golf-course, another asset for a refined clientele fond of elegant sports.

“We have selected charming detached houses, often on pilings, offering superb views of the bay, nature, and even birds from the bird sanctuary of Le Teich... These properties are usually on offer from 1 to 2.5 million euros,” says our estate-agent,

mentioning for example a villa at the very heart of La Hume, near the beach and shops. Offering 3 bedrooms and a garage, this house in lovely grounds of over 1,000 m2 with a pool enjoys a view of its yacht harbour and picturesque oyster cabins. It is offered for sale at 1.3 million euros.
