L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, riverside charm

Well-known by fans of art, antiques and flea-markets from all over the world, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue plays host to almost 300 antique-dealers ! Between Cavaillon and Carpentras, 27 km east of Avignon, this little town is one of the “must-sees” in Provence.

Nestling at the foot of the plateau of Le Vaucluse, in the plain of Le Comtat Venaissin, this charming commune with 20,000 residents is crossed by several canals fed by La Sorgue. The town’s heritage illustrates its importance in the 14th century. The Collégiale Notre-Dame-des-Anges with its baroque interior is particularly exceptional, just like the Pharmacy of L’Hôpital with its flamboyant original decor.

Noble private mansions converted into art-galleries are to be discovered on narrow streets and picturesque squares in the old town centre, such as the Hôtel Donadeï de Campredon built in the 18th century. Now a museum, it hosts a permanent space dedicated to René Char, a poet born in the commune (1907 - 1929), as well as high-end temporary exhibitions.

Twice a year, at Easter and on August 15th, more than 500 antique and secondhand dealers get together at the heart of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, presenting real finds to a clientele from many different countries. Covering a radius of 15 km around L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the Agence Laforêt founded in 2006 focuses on the sale of all kinds of properties, rentals, management, and the sale of business premises. Heading up a team of nine professionals, Gilles Lavallard explains that the property market in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue remains active even though demand has declined, allowing for stocks to be rebuilt.

“Our clientele, comprised of many Parisians, Belgian, Swiss, and a few English buyers are still keen to live here, especially when they retire. With budgets of around 350,000 €, they are looking for a charming house, ideally all on one floor, with at least 3 bedrooms, and a garden with a swimming pool.”

For this type of property, offerings remain scarce. As for the locally employed, if they have good deposits, they are targetting smart apartments in residences recently built on the commune. 1-bedroom apartments are presented at around 180,000 €. Confident in the near future for his market, Gilles Lavallard is aware of the high appeal of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue which continues to draw esthetes and fans of a certain lifestyle only found here.
