Properties between the Rhune and the ocean

La Rhune (or “Larrun”) is the highest peak in the mountain range that has borrowed its name. Rising to an altitude of 905 m, it lies on the French-Spanish border, between the Basque provinces of Labourd and La Navarre. Properties offering magnificent views of the Rhune and the ocean are blessed with weighty arguments !

Occupying an area 12 km long, 6 km wide, the Massif de la Rhune extends north to south from the Col (or mountain pass) of Saint-Ignace to that of Lizuniaga, and east to west, from the Bassin de Sare to the mountain pass of Inzola. From the top of the Rhune, the panoramic view is, of course, quite breathtaking. The surrounding territories of La Basse-Navarre, La Navarre, Le Guipuscoa, and the Basque Coast skirting the Bay of Biscay from Saint-Sebastien to the mouth of the River Adour and Les Landes, are all revealed, offering a mosaic of well-preserved landscapes. A very popular tourist destination, thanks especially to the “Petit Train de la Rhune”, a rack railway line setting off from Le Col de Saint-Ignace to reach the top of La Rhune, a delightful ride with sweeping 360° views. The more energetic tackle an 11-km hike starting from the Chemin de Xurien Borda in the Olhette neighbourhood in Urrugne and leading to the very top of the Rhune.

“In Saint-Jean-de-Luz, views of the ocean and the Rhune are very highly-prized,” says Ramine Nouri of the Côte Basque agency. “Especially in the historic neighbourhood of the Quai de l’Infante, one of the most up-market in town.” Here, noble shipbuilders’ houses with impressive 18th-century façades are now split into exceptional apartments, such as a vast 3-bedroomed example of 105 m2 in an historic building on Rue Mazarin. “Comprised of three bedrooms and a double lounge, this apartment that we are handling as sole agents has been treated to luxurious restoration. A very short walk from Place Louis XIV, it benefits from an outdoor courtyard and parking space. On offer at around 950,000 €, it will appeal to a discerning clientele in search of a very enviable address in St Jean, offering a magnificent view, and perfectly suitable as a year-round residence or holiday home.”

Higher up, magnificent locations between the Corniche and steep rugged cliffs offer stunning views of the Rhune. Like those from a house in immediate proximity to the village of Urrugne and its shops, and not far from the beaches of Hendaye, Socoa and Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Enthroned in a park of 5,100 m2, this villa with a floor area of 310 m2, awaiting completion (already airtight and watertight), offers many possibilities for interior layout. It is up for sale on the right side of 1 million euros. “It is rare to see such an opportunity in the midst of an environment of this quality. The buyer will be able to create a home that suits him perfectly, in traditional or contemporary style, without having to worry about the main structure which has been carefully completed,” says Caroline Mercier of the Mercier Biarritz agency.
